This a still from the Netflix show "Crash Landing into You,"a Korean show about a spoiled rich girl from the South who accidentally drifts into North Korea after a hang-gliding accident and meets a straightlaced North Korean army officer. It's one of the few romantic comedies I can recommend. In the scene above, the couple are enjoying a traditional Korean combo - fried chicken and beer - something I have fond memories of from my time in Korea. Despite being 0% Korean ethnically, I have spent enough time there and among Koreans that culturally I can almost feel a version of homesickness when I watch a scene like this. On my first trip to Seoul I spent an evening at a Korean style Hof (like a pub) sipping round after round of beer, feasting on chicken and smoking cigarettes. The golden ratio of indulgence. Although my emotional attachment will never measure up to that of my home and native land, in some ways I think my affection for Korea is based on the fact it reminds me of my home country. A once-colonised middle power in the shadow of a large empire striving to establish its identity without annoying its neighbours.
