Almost every morning I'm home I hear a tapping at the kitchen window. Insistent and puzzling. It's a visiting cardinal a blur of determined red energy tapping at the window with his little beak. Is he asking a question ('Can I come in?") or providing an answer? Is he confused by the fake wood blinds and mistaking them for branches? I've tried raising the blinds and changing their angle. Nothing seems to deter him from his mission. Is he the guy that slammed into the bay window a couple months back? Did it scramble his little bird brain a bit? It doesn't seem like it. It feels like he's making a point. As if he's telling me to go outside maybe and join him. Or asking me to open the window up and let him join me. Maybe he's protesting the very idea of windows. What is a window to a bird anyway? It's just a confusing wall disguised as air. Anyways, I had to tell someone.
