I interviewed Sarah Polley a few years ago and was a bit nervous. Her reputation is Canada is towering. A former child star turned director she's like our version of Jodie Foster. What makes some child actors turn into disasters and others thrive? We met at her boutique hotel lobby, just me and her no publicists or anything and she was the most gracious interview subject I may have ever been with (John Cameron Mitchell was pretty great too). She ordered a burger (which surprised me a bit in light of her well known lefty politics - she lost a tooth as a teenager to a Toronto policeman during a protest famously). And then we talked very casually about her film Away From Her, and Canada and my future plans even, which she listened to with genuine earnestness. So when she won her Oscar last night I couldn't help leaping out of my seat like a proud sibling, a little proud of and a little embarrassed by my Canadianess.
