I just finished the audio version of this - one of the best non-fiction books I've ever read. The Troubles has fascinated me for a long time but my knowledge of events was painted only the broadest of strokes. This penetrating analysis of the events is unrelenting. History is a series of truths wrapped in lies enveloped in myth, and Keefe does his level best to get to the bottom of a bottomless pit. The event that is the centerpiece of his study is the disappearance of Jean McConville, a single mother of 10 who is abducted one night and never seen again. The children, like many of the victims of the Troubles, are left to their own devices and preyed upon, neglected and forced to fend for themselves in a world gone mad. Every layer Keefe peels back reveals suffering, insanity, bitterness and in a few spots, battered dignity. Extraordinary reporting.
