At the corner of 44th and Madison inside the shell of the former Brooks Brothers flagship store is a sprawling Italian cafe, the elegant fixtures and furniture still intact. Founded in 1818, the famous suit- maker went bankrupt in 2020. Which all makes sense. Men don't wear suits like they used to. If you see images from Manhattan in the '60s almost all the men wore suits if they had an office job. The effect was striking. For my money I think the culture peaked aesthetically around 1965. Coffee, on the other hand was cheap and mostly terrible in those days. Now good coffee has become an expensive luxury, while I can barely remember the last time I wore a suit. Brooks Brothers was bought by an Italian company. Which also makes sense, since it's one of the last places on earth that values both things.
