All throughout the pandemic I hoped that I might be one of those lucky people that was immune. I was careful and didn't get sick. I went to Mardi Gras in new Orleans and didn't get sick. I rejoined my gym and... then got sick. I was angry at myself then sobered. Of course everyone can get sick, dummy. People all over the world who were healthy suddenly fall down a hole and if they're lucky get out again. Some don't get out. Some are born into a population of the chronically ill. Saintly people take care of them while the rest of us go blind at just the right moments. I've become one of those whose symptoms decided to stick around an extra month or so like an unwanted house guest. I'm just sick enough to thank my lucky stars but not sick enough to have any real right to complain about it.
