Growing up, the original Star Trek series seemed to be on TV all the time. Whenever my mum would see that we were watching it she would call it Les hommes en pyjamas ("The Men in Pajamas") because of the way their uniforms looked. I'm not sure what drew me so strongly to the show - the science fiction concepts, bright technicolor imagery, or the high camp elements - but if I ever come across it I have to stop by and get reacquainted. Like running into an old friend. William Shatner as Kirk is another reason. As a kid, I was keenly aware that he was from Montreal and went to McGill University. Later I would go to a building on campus named after him. It was a humanistic 1960s vision of the future and ultimately all the scientific advancements would only get the crew so far. To conquer evil it would have to use its instincts and compassion to make their point. It's an ideal I once convinced myself aligned closely with the values of the world I was growing up in. Since then the culture and its entertainment seem to have lost their moral compass and increasingly rely on firepower and a blend of cynicism and disingenuousness to achieve their ends.
