This is one of my favorite things I own. It sits at the intersection of many of my interests, obsessions and aesthetic quirks. The source is a 1960 French film from Claude Chabrol that's kind of a forgotten step-child of the French New Wave. It's a weird mix of suspense and melodrama and cool style but like almost all of Claude Chabrol's films, highly entertaining and many layered. Kind of like what Hitchcock might have been if he had operated outside the Hollywood studio system. That the film is being depicted through the lens of Hungary (circa?) is a special added bonus since I have a special affinity for that country and the aesthetics of Eastern Europe more generally. That the techniques is crude but the overall effect beautiful is right up my alley. I love every inch of it. It's safe to say that the person who gave this to me as a gift really gets me.
