In the latest basement flood I saw this book floating in the water and quickly retrieved it remembering the story as I fanned the pages open. It tells the story of two New Jersey teenagers in the Viet Nam era who were in love in a high-school crush kind of way but had deep feelings about the war. After a protest the two of them decided that their lives were worth less than making a stand against an injustice. So, after composing  dozens of letters to specific people explaining their actions they decided to end their lives in protest. Sadly, the police department refused to deliver all but a few of the notes. I often wonder if the letters still exist locked up somewhere and what they said.
