In most circumstances I hate being in big neon-lit shopping places. Walmart gives me hives. Home Depot and the like are a little better because of the smell of lumber, the scale of the shelves that makes it look like a shop for giants, and the odd little gadgets you can find in multiple iterations. But once in a while I crave the uniformity of a good old fashioned chain grocery store. Especially in America, it seems like time has stood still in these places. The layout hasn't changed - dairy on one end fruit and vegetables and the deli counter on the other, and in between shelves filled with processed food that in moments of weakness feels irresistible. But I think it's the orderliness itself that appeals to me if I'm feeling stressed out or overwhelmed. In this mini-universe every item has an assigned place and rests neatly among its brethren seemingly satisfied with its lot. The odd rebellious tomato or wayward avocado is dealt with soon enough. All of it under the unrelenting even glare of the neon lights and a soundtrack designed to soothe the shopper pushing his cart but not distract him from the task at hand. The whole thing gives you the impression that whatever you want is there for the taking provided you know which aisle to look in.
