We make up stories about animals. I think hawks are some of the coolest animals around but if I saw their behaviour up close I'd be appalled. They are savage predators that pick on other defenceless creatures. This morning I heard a Blue Jay make a very specific call that seemed different and I thought maybe he was telling me to refill the bird feeder. (Not really but we like to revert to stories.) When I got outside I saw a neighborhood cat scurry away looking guilty. He looked back at me with an angelic face but I know what he'd do given the chance. At least hawks hunt for food. Cats hunt for the pure sport of it. Like Republicans. Some dogs facilitate the hunt for humans but for the most part they just  want to be friends with everyone. I remember once when I was about 12 or 13 I was walking my little mutt Teddy and a middle aged man was in front of his house and started asking me questions about him. He seemed friendly enough. Then he got a weird gleam in his eye and mentioned that he had a dog. "Do you think they would fight?" he asked. Then he rushed off to get his dog and I got out of there as fast as I could.
