Sometimes there are things from the past that seem to grab us by the shoulders and shake us. Last night I was watching one of my favorite Sci-fi shows from the '60s The Outer Limits. Darker than its contemporary, The Twilight Zone, it's also more focused on visions of the apocalypse . The episode I came across last night was called O.B.I.T. and was in some ways so prescient it almost felt like it had been backdated to speak to us. The O.B.I.T. in question is a machine that can spy on everyone everywhere and has been placed on earth by devious aliens to cause the destruction of mankind from within. Part Jeremy Bentham's panopticon, part Instagram and part reality TV it somehow looked forward to a future where we can't take our eyes off the minutiae of our fellow citizens like some kind of ever-regressing addiction. Eventually the monster in the mirror is revealed but the implication is that it might just be too late.
