Edward Hopper is an American artist of the 20th Century known most for his painting "Nighthawks". He also redefined the landscape painting, elevating the American scene to something noble and transcendent. I was drawn to this early sketch at his retrospective and the way he rendered his hat. Simple. But if there was any more detail or any less it wouldn't seem quite as right. Or as effective. Which is what an expertly rendered work of art is supposed to make you think.
