In Korea at the crosswalks you'll see these strips of light at your feet to remind you when it's safe to cross. This is in addition to a beeping sound and the traditional walk/don't walk signals. It's an extra layer of protection and it's typical of the country's approach to public safety. There are glass barriers across the entirety of the subway system, which must have cost a lot to build. But it means that no one will ever fall or be pushed on the tracks ever. No small thing. There have been some high profile disasters - a ferry filled with schoolchildren sank and a crowd was crushed at a Halloween gathering - which may call that commitment into question. But an idea of the public good permeates society and is one reason the pandemic claimed fewer lives than other places with little dissent or protests of individual liberty.
