Some days my lamp looks like a lamp. Then from a new angle it suddenly became the Chrysler Building in miniature. Do you see it? Our eyes adjust and glaze over and gleam. In French there's an expression for when people get into a pessimistic mood, "voir tout en noir" - literally seeing everything black. It's accurate and evocative. When my mood descends there's a thin layer of grey over everything, much like the polluted sky over Manhattan at the moment. But on that day and today, the saturation levels are turned up on objects and the edges around objects are a little sharper.
