The United Nations Headquarters is filled with symbols. All the flags stand side by side in an orderly row and are given equal weight. Sculptures decry violence and tapestries celebrate peace. The building itself is a metaphor for a certain kind of utopia. Each country donates art and artifacts that represent their nation's history. The range across the history of civilizations and cover the spectrum of craftsmanship. This is from the 4th Century or 5th Century C.E (what we used to call A.D) and was part of the entrance to a Synagogue in western Galilee. I had walked past it dozens of times but today I happened to notice it. Other days I pause at Ming Dynasty vases or Scandinavian mosaics. They are meaningful and beautiful and important and significant. But they stand mute and powerless to what goes on outside.
