Bassists are usually known as the quiet ones in the band. They provide the undercurrent of the music. When I played music for a brief period in my life I played the bass. I remembered that when I heard the original bassist for the Eagles died. Randy Meisner. Apparently he was kind of shy and didn't like the band's fame and the notoriety so he quit. The Eagles were everywhere in the '70s. Inescapable. I'm not a huge fan but I recalled that Greatest hits album my brother had on cassette and one particular road trip it never seemed to leave the car's player. The case sat there in the space between the front seats, its plastic covering reflecting the rays of the sun, the strange photographic perspective of the cover eventually embedded in my sense memory. I got to know that album by heart. Eventually the memory faded and hearing those songs took on different connotations but in some corner of my mind the sounds I hear are coming from the whirring plastic wheels of that cassette and the case is being warmed by the sun as the highway landscape rolls past.
