This is a thing now. Keeping merchandise in the pharmacies in Midtown under lock and key. To access many things you have to ring a bell and wait for an employee to unlock the case so that you can have your toothpaste or heartburn medicine, or shampoo or even it seems a Lindor bar that retails for $1.50. We all know why - they are trying to make their stores homeless proof. That's clearly the target market for these devices. They kind of remind me of the anti-bird spikes that buildings put up to keep away the pigeons. But people feed the pigeons. Some good souls feed the homeless too or give them money. I do when I can but mostly I shake my head at them apologetically or cross the street to avoid the crazy ones like everyone else. And ring for the attendant, trying to keep my slight annoyance at bay as I wait for them to respond.
