There was a question circulating online recently asking whether women enjoyed doing errands and wondering why they would more than men. The implication was that it was a rare chance for busy career women with child care duties to be alone. Increasingly I find I enjoy my weekend errands. It gives me a chance to tick things off my list but at the pace I want with scenic detours to the soundtrack of my choice. I can listen to music as the outside world passes by as if I'm in the movie of my life. Lately I've also taken to listening to podcasts of fiction as I browse the aisles of a my large local supermarket. It blots out the '80s hits usually playing and imprints a new mood onto a familiar setting. I like wading through the outside world like I'm in warm waist-deep water. In no hurry and comforted by familiar activities I've been doing since childhood. So much of the world is becoming recognizable, so doing the things I can't or won't do online - dropping off dry-cleaning, putting gas in my car and the like - grounds me. Today a man in the seafood aisle suddenly turned to me and shouted "$9! For two lbs of shrimp. That's a great deal!" Okay, buddy. Thanks for the tip. Then he drifted his way and I drifted mine.
