I would never fly the US flag at my house but about a year ago, after seeing an interview with President Volodymyr Zelensky on 60 Minutes, I decided to put this up. I wondered if there would be any backlash or any words of support but no one really said anything either way. It's a token gesture that doesn't do anything except say that a wrong has been done and I've noticed.Zelensky first came to the world's attention as an actor in a hit TV show about a history teacher that becomes president against all odds to fight corruption and restore honesty to politics. It's a fascinating story like if Charlie Chaplin had become Prime Minister after The Great Dictator. When I first heard he had won (knowing nothing about the show) I thought it made a mockery of politics and was another example of celebrity culture run amok. But the series is smart and has serious points to make about Ukraine's situation but also about the nature of power. The wise fool who can't help blurting out the truth is an old archetype going back to the Emperor's New Clothes but this real life Chauncey Gardner knew exactly what he was doing. Dismissed as a lightweight he took on the oligarchs, which eventually provoked the Russian bear. He's on the side of reason against might and honesty against venality in a morality tale as old as time.
