In a time of grief or confusion, the ground shifting, shifting under your feet you look for familiar things. Jimmie Stewart is a North Star for people of the TV age, his presence like a kindly uncle. In The Man from Laramie weak people are cruel and revenge for the death of a loved one is pursuit relentlessly but is ultimately unsatisfying. In real life there are no villains to blame for those we lose. Sometimes we blame ourselves, but that chase only goes in circles like an endless series of switchbacks down a mountain until you're on the ground looking up at a mute sky for answers that won't come.
