Taking a later train, I had time to kill in Grand Central so I wandered around noticing things that would usually pass by in a blur. Like a history lesson about the place itself. Hard to believe but at one point the City was going to tear down Grand Central the way it had demolished the beautiful old Penn Station. Apparently Jackie Kennedy Onassis was instrumental in saving it using a lot of her own large fortune. The rich get a lot of stick for being out of touch and self-involved, but there is a group of philanthropic blue-bloods that recognize their position and look to spread their fortune (in both senses of the word). New York without Grand Central would have been poorer and another short-sighted decision. Some who no longer have to worry about money worry about other people and the quality of the public world. Others wall themselves off and amass greater and greater fortunes. History is the ongoing battle between the two impulses.
