No matter how modern and sleek the buildings get, they are always there, heads down working, the city's ajummas. The so-called Economic Miracle the country experienced is sometimes hailed as some sort of unexplainable mystery. But closer inspection reveals that it was mostly just hard work on a massive scale by successive generations. Those habits still survive in an older generation and give the country a homey feeling that many modern world cities have let fade into the past. The old shoe repairman or vegetable seller has been driven out to make way for the modern supermarket or shopping mall. Korea, unique in its combination of tradition and modernity embraces them both.
