Whenever I travel to Asia, a new set of films appear in my Netflix menu, then magically disappears again when I leave the eastern hemisphere. This time I was determined to make the most of this geographical quirk and have been watching the Studio Ghibli films that are hard to find at home. Whisper of the Heart unfolds like a story told by a friend, slow but not meandering. Sweet, but it avoids being sentimental. The people move through the world naturally and we feel for what they're going through. Somehow we forget that these characters are ink drawings existing in hand-painted backdrops. It's all like a believable fairy tale. You want to live inside it for longer than it goes on then want to return there when it ends.
