The coming of Fall takes me to a familiar place in my mind. A place I've been going probably ever since I started school. The light gets shorter and we become aware that time is passing in a way that affects our senses. This time for me is still and will always be associated with a "Back to School" feeling and the sense that "time's up." When I get back home from work on weekdays I see the light ebbing away from the sky and want things to slow down just a little. The garden has gone to sleep and the way it looks under the sunshine takes on a certain lost aura. "What did I do all summer?" I ask myself, and the question spirals into a series of bigger questions turned inward. Fall is also a welcome relief from the swelter of summer and the expectation. Feeling that first cool draft blown in through an open window part of me relaxes and is eager to put on a second layer and dive into a good book with no fear I'll be missing something going on outside. For a few months it becomes the perfect environment to go for walks, look at nature through a bay window or stay up late watching documentaries under a comforter.
