Some days, Coke Is It. If I've had too much coffee and want to settle my stomach, it's like a kind of populist medicine. I heard recently that Guadeloupe was a colony much more valuable to the French than Canada - mostly due to the sugar trade. People killed and died for the stuff and it's still a major source of wealth and of unhealthiness. Supposedly we crave sugar when we're stressed. Which makes sense. It can also be a kind of self reward - for working hard, enduring a difficult day, or having a healthy meal. Makers of food slip sugar into all kinds of foods, like drug smugglers, and we seem nearly powerless to stop our pursuit of that sugar high. But lots of things we have in common don't really bring us together.
