This is a Chase branch that's now closed. I don't know when the last time that clock worked. Bank branches are closing all over. But the machines remain. What was once a pioneering, exciting technology (first started in New York in 1969) became commonplace then mundane. It was only in the '80s that the banks started charging fees and since then the inevitable move away from human tellers to automated ones had begun. Tellers cost the banks money - the machines cost us. What more is there to say. Dealing with real tellers in person now feels a little anachronistic and they seem uncommonly happy to see you. Like they missed us. People shop less in person, now too and order their food ahead of time on their phones. I ordered a coffee today on my phone and went to the shop and found the cup with my name on it and left without saying a word. I'm not sure why. Some days I crave the interaction with people. On others I want the robots to steer the ship. We once had to change channels by hand. Once you get your hands on a remote control there's no going back.
