When I mentioned the city of Busan to my history-loving brother he referenced the Korean War and a significant battle there. But that was lifetimes ago. In the natural order of things one generation makes sacrifices for the next one. If all goes according to plan they have a better life - or at least a higher standard of living. Modern Busan looks like a futuristic city. High-rises seem to emerge from the water like some kind of contemporary Atlantis. In its bid to host the 2030 World Expo it's building floating cities as an idea to house those displaced by climate change. It would seem a shoe-in to win the bid being in many ways a model city in a modern thriving industrialized democracy. Its main competition, though, is Riyad, Saudi Arabia, which offers the unlimited resources of an oil-rich monarchy. The Saudis seem to be winning everything these days so the competition will be stiff. Rome, that ancient eternal city is the the other candidate and is barely being considered.
