There is a small island in the East River between the UN and Long Island City I imagine emigrating to and becoming a sort of metropolitan Robinson Crusoe when I have small pragmatic dreams of escaping. It's named U Thant Island for the former Thai Secretary General of the UN. It was named after Thant by a friend of his, guru Sri Chinmoy who meditated there twice a week. It's uninhabited and looks a little forlorn out there in the cold waters waiting for visitors. I see myself there on some days camouflaged and hiding in plain sight as the city around me speeds towards the end of each day - both of us blissfully unaware of the other.

“Every man or woman should not only ask himself or herself what he or she is going to do in the world, but also ask ‘Will there be a world in which I can live.'” - U Thant
