Art has a certain kind of restorative quality, which fills a specific kind of void. There's a malaise of living that infects us all and on this day it was my turn (again). Richard Serra's massive curvilinear sculptures forged out of iron that looks like it came fully formed on this earth centuries ago, occupies a floor of the DIA Beacon museum. They are unseen in this photo, washed out by the light spilling in from the late afternoon sun. But the design of this particular one allows you to slip through a crack in the exterior then walk inside around a narrow corner then enter its center where you feel encircled and protected and inside of some sort of answer to a question. In a certain spot the light hits you in the face full on so that you have to close your eyes. And it's impossible for that moment to feel anything but warm and entirely visible.
