In those times when I want to watch something on a television screen and can't commit to a film or a serialized TV show, I turn to one of my favorite documentary series of all time: The Story of Film: An Odyssey which takes us on a meandering journey across the global landscape of film, jumping back and forth in time and space turning the medium over in its hands and looking at it from every angle and perspective, narrated by the film's creator himself, Mark Cousins, who calmly tells the story of film in a lilting Irish accent that washes over me like a warm wind. I have seen it before and purchased it, allowing me to dip in and out of its waters. The insights he delivers are wrapped in affection and wonder for what men and women have been doing with the invention from the subtlest nuance to the grandest gestures. Most importantly, maybe, is how he rescues the stories on the periphery from under Hollywood's shadow.
