The spirit of Secreatry-General Dag Hammarskjold still haunts the UN headquarters. He seemed unique in his ardor to pursue justice when the role of the UN head was still somewhat undefined. Beforehand and subsequently men were chosen who were acceptable compromises that would act safely within the confines of the bureaucracy. Hammarskjold was different. He seemed to more regularly consult his moral compass and made a lot of enemies - especially among the colonial powers that still held sway in Africa. His actions to intercede in the Congo may have eventually caused his death in a plane crash. There is evidence for this but none of it conclusive. The two narratives - accident and murder - exist side-by-side in the historical record shadowing each other. How he's viewed now is a kind of moral litmus taste - cautionary tale or exemplar.
