They looked happy to see me. But who knows. What goes through the mind of a donkey when they see a man approach smiling and holding out a gently closed hand. They could ignore me or walk away but they didn't. They were curious and approached. And were as friendly as donkeys get with a stranger. Even though one of them was giving me the side eye. I want to be friendly with every animal I meet but a lot of the time the barrier is too high. And they are far off in a different space and there is no common language. Donkeys (and horses) seem to give us a chance. I can't really understand  - or forgive - anyone who doesn't at least try to seize it
