There are moments like this in every day. In spaces that connect the main events of our lives. Grey corridors that take us from a car to a restaurant or between a sidewalk and an office. They can feel interminable in the moment. You feel superior to the activity and the location; like you have better things to do, more relevant and more interesting places to be. They are predictable and undramatic. (The most exciting thing that happened to me at an ATM was the time I found out from a video store clerk that a nearby machine was dispensing $20 bills instead of 5's. That was fun. But usually it's when we switch off, go into battery conserving mode, auto-pilot, and wander across the wild landscape of our mind. Then suddenly your attention comes into focus and you take a close look at the industrial machine that has been perfected to have no personality or characteristics. It matches the floor and the featureless carpet. All of it created to be an invisible facilitator of consumerism. Suddenly you hear the song that's playing and you forget where you are and what year it is.
