Cravings are persistent and insidious things. Mind over matter is all well and good but when you've decided to avoid something or indulge in less of it, suddenly it calls to you from every street corner. If you give up drinking then bars look like softly-lit nirvanas. When I stop eating meat, the scent of fried chicken wafts under my nostrils and tempts me like a cartoon fox. I don't have a particular weakness for cake but it's a good and graphic illustration of decadence. My cravings tend towards the more savory end of the spectrum. When a salt craving hits in the afternoon or late at night it's as if I'm possessed by a nagging demon. As Oscar Wilde once said, the best way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. There's a trick to this of course. Yielding in little doses. If you can. Many people can't moderate. I don't really have an addictive personality as confirmed by a research scientist at a party who called me "a chipper" when I said that I smoked 2 or 3 cigarettes a day. If anything ultimately defeats me it's chocolate. No matter the dietary research, I will always find the study that says it is good for you and cling to it like a precious gem. That's love.
