The movement of the stars and the planets in the constellations goes on whether we're focused on it or not. The moon and the sun are indifferent to our studies and flattery and veneration. They circle each other like wary boxers or shy suitors never coming together. When their predictable paths shift slightly and the moon steps in front of the sun it feels a little like the end of the world. At least the way those 50's sci-fi movies portrayed it - the sudden darkness descending on a sunny day as if a huge dark cloak had been thrown over us. Some people have spent their lives studying these moments. Others, feel underwhelmed. "I don't get what the big deal is for just 10 seconds," my mother said over the phone. She watched it on TV.
