I don't normally click on the suggested podcasts the algorithm spits out but I was glad I did this time. Scene On is sort of a throwback podcast that started in 2015 before the podcast revolution changed the format. It's kind of old-fashioned citizen radio - from both sides of the microphone. Students and amateurs for the most part are tasked with finding stories in their local communities by talking to ordinary people in their day-to-day lives. Sounds a bit boring maybe - especially in light of the highly polished productions that began appearing around this time. But it's not. It reminds me of the Studs Terkel school of journalism that would rely on patience and legwork to uncover the stories that live just beneath the surface of the days. Like door-to-door salesmen of yore who knock on a hundred doors to sell a few encyclopedias, these stories feel hard earned and honest. Any poetry that results, emerges organically.
