Movies have lost some of their luster in recent years but there's still a bit of magic dust that won't ever wear off. The first time I ever entered a movie theatre to see a film it was like being let in on a secret. Here are the keys to the Magic Kingdom. Once you have them in your hands you never quite let them go. Everyone loves movies pretty much. You can't say that about many things. And there's nothing at  all natural about them. People liken them to dreams to try to account for their popularity and the sway they have over us, but that's only partially plausible. When you're fully engaged with a good movie it's like the opposite of being asleep...but I guess they both allow you to dispense with reality and fully buy into what's going on in front of you.  Both are also backdoor escapes from the world. For two hours yesterday afternoon I didn't exist as the outside went about its business. No one knew where I was and when it's done right, my identity becomes subsumed by a constructed shadow reality leading me into rooms I don't usually venture in. I guess they are kind of like dreams...
