The films of Hirokazu Kore-eda have gradually seeped into my consciousness. The film Monster was playing on my flight so I watched it and frame by frame it presented a convincing argument for his world view. The villain of the film is a shape shifter that assumes the character of many different poeople until it dissipates, having done its work. In reality we are asked to transcend the ideas of good and evil and instead consider how people are asked to suffer in society to uphold shaky principles and conventions. Every film he has made challenges what you thought you knew...about filmmaking, about morality, and about our abilities to steer the course of our own lives. He's one of the most interesting voices out there.
