Living in a building in the city with lots of apartments stacked together like a hive is paradoxical. I had forgotten what it's like. At dinnertime you can sometimes detect the faint smell of food making its way down the hallway. You catch glimpses of your neighbors passing you on the stairs and wonder what lives belong to these faces then you forget all about them moments later. You feel less isolated surrounded by these distinct persons but somehow more conscious of your aloneness. The sound of doors opening and closing, locks turning, become a kind of chorus. As you leave your apartment, sounds escape through the cracks in the closed doors... dishes clanging atonally, a baby's wail, the theme song from an old sitcom...
