This painting is by Turner. It's called Rain, Steam, and Speed - The Great Western Railway. What to say about it What drew me to make a copy and turn it into my work computer's desktop background, where I see every working day. Seeing a work like this and comparable works of music, film or writing I find a commonality among them all. Something a little ineffable and hard to express. What is it? It seems to do a lot by seeming to do very little. It feels like there is very little effort expended to make an eloquent point about the world. As if the artist is stating the obvious. That the world is a fleeting world of light and colour, maybe. Or that there is a tension between between Nature and machines that will define the world from now on in a way that was quite new when he painted this. 1844. But that's just a single point of view - there are many interpretations possible, which feels like another feature of great works. They are open-ended but not vague. They make you want to look at them closer and longer sure there are parts you missed.
