Weather isn't supposed to hurt. Yet here we are. And it's a footnote to the news. We watched Don't Look Up  and thought, "yes what a perfect analogy!" But nothing changed. In Argentina the new president wants to drill for more oil as does the Republican nominee here, whose policy is that the threat is exaggerated. The word hoax comes up. This from a man who probably spends 95% of his life in a climate-controlled bubble. Infuriating. All of it. This morning the handkerchief I dabbed my forehead with was overmatched - it couldn't compete with the beads of sweat forming on my face like I was a wax figure melting. The numbers on the weather forecasts look unreal. Like a patient's readings veering into the unhealthy range. The news talks about something else. Anything else. It's worse for others. It's worse elsewhere. An NYPD recruit died in training. Hundreds perish in India, or on a pilgrimage to Mecca. Collateral damage for a lifestyle. The air conditioners whirr incessantly. A Con Ed flyer tells me to only use one big appliance at a time. My neighbours multiple wall units hum louder than ever.
